Yemen Holidays

Although for the moment any holiday to Yemen remains the preserve of the more hardened traveller, it will, one day, be at the top of everyone's list. In the mountains, where there is some interesting trekking, small villages sit perched on top of near vertical precipices protecting them from attack. Narrow alley ways wind between the houses which are neatly built of hand hewn granite blocks. Every man carries a rifle of some kind in the same way as we would a watch, but the effect is medieval in atmosphere and not the slightest bit intimidating. On the plains, a wide variety of crops are grown for export all over the world, while, from the beach, there is superb diving to be had on the untouched reefs of the Red Sea.

Yemen has a troubled past and is very backward in comparison to its oil rich neighbours. Only 40 years ago, city gates were locked at night, there was no postal system and public executions were commonplace. There are still areas which are out of bounds but, for the most part, travel to Yemen is safe.










There are few options available in Yemen. However, both Dubai and Oman are linked, enabling a few days of sophistication on the beach at the end of any visit.
