When to go When to go

Any time of the year will give you a rewarding visit to the Galapagos Islands. However, there are differences between the two seasons that shape Galapagos.

The Dry Season

From June-November, the subtropical look of the islands will surprise any visitor. Days can be moderately windy (due to the south east trade winds), and generally start off with a fine layer of moisture (called Guara). Eventually, the sun does come out, and then the temperatures are very pleasant. The air temperature ranges from 23C to 28C and the overall pattern is dry heat. For early and late hours in the day, we recommend a light jacket, windbreaker or parka and light cotton trousers.

Galapagos water temperatures fluctuate between 18C-23C. In order to extend your time in the water while snorkelling, we strongly recommend the use of a light neoprene wet suit.

The Hot Season

From December to May, the Galapagos Islands pick up a true tropical look. Not only is there some rainfall at this time of the year, but the ocean is at its warmest. With the gradual disappearance of the south-east trade winds, the waters from the north now bathe the islands. These easy-to-evaporate- waters form clouds of rain that may give you a shower or two in a week. The islands pick up a beautiful green emerald look, contrasting magically with the turquoise of the ocean, and the shocking black of the lava. The islands are humid, and days can be very hot, specially around noon. Temperatures range 24C-30C. In order to take advantage of comfortable air temperatures, land-based activities are scheduled differently/earlier than in the Dry Season. Swimmers and snorkellers can stay in the water for longer periods.

Galapagos sample day

While this is no ordinary or typical day in the Galapagos Islands, there will usually be an island (or a visitor site) visit in the morning, while a different one is planned for the afternoon.

Swimming and snorkelling are scheduled daily, and will be announced accordingly.

Natural history lectures and daily briefings are scheduled before dinner.

Whilst a Galapagos holiday is active there is plenty of time to relax and remember that everything is optional.
