Whale watching Whale watching

The Galapagos from June to September are a great area for whale watching. So too off the coast of Ecuador where each year the South-eastern Pacific Humpback whale migrates north from its feeding grounds in the Antarctic to the warmer waters off the coasts of Ecuador to breed and calve, especially in the shallow waters of Puerto Cayo and Puerto Lopez.

Humpback whales are the most acrobatic of the bigger whales. They like to breach out the water or hit the surface repetitively with their flippers or flukes. It is believed that the sound produced in this form could be used for communications purposes. Humpback whales are also well known as the "singer" whales during the breeding season. The meaning of the songs is probably related to the reproduction process.

By July whale numbers reach in excess of 2,000 off the coast, and calves are born from the end of the month through August. This is also the time when humpbacks are most active, looking for females and chasing off other male suitors, and so unsurprisingly their displays are impressive; with numerous out of the water breaches, tail slaps, belly up swimming, pectoral slaps and side swimming to name a few of their most common antics! It all makes for great whale watching.
