Holidays to Urguay

Set between Brazil, Argentina and the Atlantic Ocean, Uruguay is one of the smallest countries in South America. With the engaging capital city of Montevideo, the beautiful colonial town of Colonia, a large number of long sandy beaches and a beautiful landscape, Uruguay is considered a most intriguing holiday destination.

The capital, Montevideo, was founded in 1726 and is situated on the River Plate. Highlights of the city include the Mercado del Puerto, the Plaza Independencia, the Plaza de la Constitucion and the French and Italian colonial buildings.

The rolling countryside is home to the gaucho, herds of cattle, sheep and estancias. Scattered across the landscape, many of these beautiful estancias are now open for guests and a short stay here is an interesting way to experience the traditional Uruguayan way of farming life.

On the coast, Punta del Este is one of the main beach resorts in southern South America and is home to a selection of chic and sophisticated hotels and vibrant night life. Punta del Este is the playground of the rich and famous and is the weekend retreat for the Portenos from Buenos Aires. The sea is warm and the beaches are the ideal place to relax, unwind and soak up the sun.

Colonia del Sacramento, west of Montevideo, was founded by the Portuguese in 1680. The Barrio Historico, with its beautifully preserved colonial buildings and picturesque Plaza Mayor, has now been designated an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Colonia is a fascinating place to explore on a day trip from the cosmopolitan capital of Montevideo.
