Just south of the cosmopolitan city of Trabzon is one of the region’s most spectacular sites, the Sumela Monastery. Founded in Byzantine times and abandoned after the creation of the Turkish Republic, this incredible monastery clings to a sheer rock face 1,200 metres above alpine forests and mountain streams.
Sinop is one of the most beautiful natural harbours on the Black Sea coast and has been a trading port for over a thousand years. Mainly visited by local tourists, it is famous for its traditional nautical wood carvings, good crystal and the original cotton clothes of the city.
