Dominated by mountains, Kazakhstan offers a wide range of treks to suit most interests and capabilities. On the southern border lies Kyrgyzstan, separated by mountains of the Ala-Too range. Travel between the two countries via mountain passes and past alpine mountain lakes. The area around Almaty is ideal for those wanting relatively easy day walks with only a couple of nights under canvas. Further afield, the magnificent Charyn Canyon, Kazakhstan's answer to the Grand Canyon, offers spectacular gorges and beautifully coloured rock strata.
