In comparison to Nepal, very few foreigners go trekking in Bhutan and yet there are some spectacular routes to choose from. Ponies or yaks are used as porters so there is always a ride available and several of the lakes and rivers are teeming with trout.
With most of the population of Bhutan concentrated in the lowland and more fertile areas, trekking in Bhutan becomes a wonderfully rewarding experience.
All treks are fully supported with a team of people to look after you and the food is varied and excellent. A wide assortment of trek options are available ranging from fairly easy three day treks to much longer and tougher variations.
For instance, the eight day trek in the Jhomolhari area of western Bhutan is ideal for the serious walker and will reach altitudes of 4,876m. Here, in one of the most pristine regions of the country, bears, takin and blue sheep roam undisturbed while the semi-nomadic people of Tibeto-Burmese origin tend their yak herds in high summer pastures.
