The Empty Quarter in Oman beckons

Since Wilfred Thesiger published his book Arabian Sands in 1959, the rolling deserts flanking the borders of Oman and Saudi Arabia and down to Yemen have, despite their ever changing colours and magical beauty, remained synonymous with hardship and discomfort.

Now, for the first time, thanks to two enterprising Scots with over 35 years of living in Oman, it is possible to sample this extraordinary area of unspoilt landscape in supreme comfort. Using the latest 4x4s you will spend the days exploring and learning about the region while at night you will camp under the stars in huge luxury tents, double (or twin) beds with attached bathrooms. A large dining tent, lit by candles and oil lamps and strewn with cushions and rugs boasts a small library of books and maps together with a telescope for the night skies, while the ever attentive staff will serve drinks, canapés and delicious meals.

If the Empty Quarter does not appeal, then change the venue and replicate the event on a deserted stretch of beach - brilliant for children and a wonderful alternative to the predictability of modern hotels.

Track the elusive tiger at Pench National Park, India

BBC1 recently screened a three part documentary "Tiger - Spy in the Jungle", a beautiful tale which followed 4 newborn tiger cubs through to adulthood in Pench National Park. It was the latest creation of John Downer, who recorded footage over a period of 3 years in Pench National Park, India.

You can also visit this lesser known National Park with Steppes Travel and follow in the footsteps of John Downer, tracking the elusive tiger with well educated park naturalists. The park season runs from October to June. However, in the hotter summer months of April to May, the water is scarce, forcing animals to venture from their cover and into view to find the ever decreasing water supply. If you can handle the heat, this is the ultimate time to go.

You may wish to take advantage of the park being quieter at this time and enjoy an exclusive jeep safari, with a dedicated naturalist and explore the park at your own pace. The park elephants and their devoted mahouts are able to offer you an unforgettable experience of tracking the elusive tiger by elephant back for an entire day. You will venture further afield covering areas of the park that are inaccessible by vehicles.

After an exciting day tracking tiger, stay in ultimate luxury at the CC Africa/Taj Safaris lodge, Bagh Van in Pench.

With only a 5 hour drive between Pench and Bandavgarh, it is possible to visit and enjoy both parks during your time in India.

Japan

We are delighted to have added Japan to our portfolio. Why Japan? No country in the world is as 'foreign' as Japan and whilst this is part of the country's charm, it can cause practical difficulties. It is thus essential to have someone planning your trip who knows the country first-hand and who can talk you through the precise details of your day-to-day itinerary.

A beautiful, intricately designed puzzle, there is much that we think we know about Japan - neon-lit Tokyo, the photogenic Mount Fuji - but in reality there is much that remains an enigma - not least how such a modern country still embraces tradition. From the stunning landscapes of Hokkaido in the temperate north to the sub-tropical islands of Okinawa in the south, the calm of Japan's Zen temples, the majesty of its ancient castles make Japan one of Paul's favourite and most rewarding destinations.

His journey began in Tokyo, where he was immersed in the city's full-tilt modernity, before visiting the charming mountain towns of Takayama and Hakone. Next stop via shinkanse, the famed bullet train, was Kyoto, the 'supreme repository of Japan's ancient traditions', where he enjoyed Japanese cuisine and tea ceremonies, wandered through elegant temple gardens, visited galleries and artisans' studios and soaked in traditional hot baths.

From there to Kanazawa, which during the Edo Period, was the seat of the Maeda clan, the second most powerful clan after the Tokugawa in terms of rice production and fief size. Accordingly, Kanazawa grew to become a town of great cultural achievements, rivaling Kyoto and Edo (Tokyo). Spared the destruction of World War II air raids, parts of the old castle town, such as samurai, temple and pleasure districts, have survived in pretty good condition.

End your stay in Okinawa , a semi-tropical archipelago that is little explored by foreign visitors.

Paul travelled throughout Japan with a local guide. He travelled by local trains and buses, he explored on foot. Throughout Paul stayed in a variety of accommodation from ultra-luxurious hotels to traditional ryokans.

Japan remains an enigma, where an insider's knowledge and attention to detail pay off. Paul will provide you with all the support required to experience the real Japan.

Indochina

Travel opportunities to this region have changed over the years with the easing of border restrictions and improved flight connections. The standard of accommodation and service is much improved and thus the countries of South East Asia have finally emerged from the shadow.

Cambodia
A country of unsettling loveliness, Cambodia rarely fails to enchant and engage. But there is now much more to Cambodia than the enigmatic stone faces of the Bayon or the extraordinary temple complex of Angkor Wat. Yes, it still remains the perfect add-on to a visit to Vietnam, Thailand or Laos, but for those seeking something a little different visit the hill tribes of the north or if you are after something a little more relaxing then unwind on the idyllic beaches along the tranquil shores of the south, in particular the quiet fishing village of Kep.

Laos
Many bemoan the loss of 'Asia in the old days'. It can still be found in Laos. It is one of the most delightful countries you can visit, a land of graceful temples, saffron clad monks and the charming ancient capital Luang Prabang where times seems to stand still. The country moves at a pace as languid as the Mekong River that flows through it. Indeed, the Mekong holds the key to the country and a cruise is arguably the best way to open up its secrets.

Vietnam
From stereotypical images of paddy fields and conical hats in the Mekong Delta to colourful hill tribes in the north, Vietnam is hauntingly beautiful. Revel in some of the sparkling city hotels, relish its cuisine and relax in some luxury properties on the beaches of the South China Sea. There is so much to see in this country which stretches for 1,000 miles from north to south, but travel by plane, train, road and boat with our expert knowledge makes it all possible. Vietnam also combines well with Cambodia or a visit to Laos.

Myanmar
Myanmar is a land of golden pagodas, lush vegetation, white sand beaches, remote hill tribes and a gentle, kind and smiling people. By virtue of the limited infrastructure, travel around Myanmar is somewhat unpredictable. However, better roads and shallow draft river boats now allow excursions deeper into tribal areas. Once the richest country in South East Asia, economically Myanmar is a shadow of its former self. Nevertheless, the culture and pride of the people lives on and it remains a fascinating and remarkable country to visit.

Thailand
An intriguing mix of ancient and modern, Thailand is frequently dismissed as being overrun by foreigners, but there are still large areas of this polite and beautiful country that are a joy to travel through. In the north, it is possible to combine visits to some graceful Khmer temples with some leisurely trekking through rich paddy fields and dense forests or ride elephants in the national parks. With gems such as the Four Seasons Tented Camp in Chiang Rai, throughout your stay in Thailand you can indulge yourself and stay in luxury.

Botswana

Botswana has become synonymous with high-end luxury to the extent that its incredible game viewing and wilderness experiences have almost become secondary. With unrivalled first hand experience our team can show you a more real but no less comfortable side to Botswana.

Our team has travelled throughout the country and found an array of superb little camps and lodges. Some are in private concession areas and others in national parks. All are remote, so access is usually by flying. Some are surrounded by water and safaris are by boat and mokoro, others on dry land where you will walk or explore by 4WD.

We can also organise private mobile safaris where you are able to move from one bush camp to another and often from one Game Reserve to another. This gives you the opportunity to design a tailor-made safari to meet your every need and really get off the beaten track.

Botswana is not only about the abundant wildlife and pristine vistas. It is a country of rich and diverse cultures and we can offer you the unique experience of interacting with one of the oldest cultures in the world, the San People of the lost world of the Kalahari.

Finally, remember that add-ons to the Victoria Falls or Mozambique are a great start or end to your safari.

15 day itinerary to Botswana from £4,495 per person based on two people sharing, including economy flights, transfers, activities and accommodation.
