Often referred to as the 'forgotton land', Toledo is the southernmost district of Belize.
Toledo district is still relatively unexplored territory with almost 1700 square miles of pristine rainforest, wildlife reserves, rivers, mountains, caves and traditional Maya villages.
Punta Gorda is the central hub of Toledo District with a relaxed and friendly community consisting mainly of Garifuna, Creole, Mopan, Kekchi Maya and East Indian people. Punta Gorda is a perfect base from which to explore the rest of southern Belize such as Rio Blanco waterfalls, the Sapodilla Cayes, Monkey River and Punta Negra Lake.
Originally established as a fishing lodge, Machaca Hill is a beautiful retreat located just 5 miles north of Punta Gorda in the privately owned and maintained Laughing Falcon Reserve.
