As well as being the exciting and lively metropolis everyone has heard about, Tokyo also has some more traditional sites and architecture.
Tokyo is the example of modern Japan testing the boundaries of tradition. One of the largest and busiest cities in the world finds buildings constructed in every available space, raised expressways winding across the urban landscapes high above crowded walkways. The overground power lines and cables, provide communications and electricity that powers the dream. At dusk, neon lighting brings a surreal glow. Despite this urban Japan, we will take you to little reminders of the past and snapshots of traditional culture that are unique, and time spent here is sure to be a memorable experience.
Tokyo was once a city that lived by its rivers and canals. During the Edo period almost all commerce came to the capital on waterways. As wheeled transport, particularly rail, grew, the rivers and canals declined. In recent years, the main river of the city, the Sumida, has been cleaned up to an extent, and river traffic is on the increase again.
A little-seen view of Tokyo is available on the river trip from Hinode Pier to Asakusa in Northern Tokyo.
The current Imperial Palace is located on the former site of Edo Castle, a large park area surrounded by moats and massive stone walls in the centre of Tokyo, a short walk from Tokyo station. It is the residence of Japan's Imperial Family.
The Senso-ji Temple, popularly known as Asakusa Kannon, is Tokyo's most sacred and spectacular temple. A shopping street of over 200 metres, called Nakamise, leads from the outer gate to the temple's second gate and is a treasure trove of traditional wares. It has a history of several centuries.
For a relaxing day excursion, go to Nikko which is easily accessible from Tokyo by express train. Known as much for its autumn colour as for its Buddhist temples, the natural beauty of this region is wonderful throughout the year. Shrines and Temples in the Nikko district have been registered as part of the World Cultural Heritage sites, and are surrounded by lush forests with ancient trees, lakes, mountains, waterfalls and spas. Large bell towers with skirts, numerous stone lanterns and devoted pilgrims make for a pleasant day out.
