Rivers make an impression. Some are so powerful that they create spectacular gorges such as Tiger Leaping Gorge on the Mekong, the famous Three Gorges on the Yangtze and Nine Bends on the Jiuqu Xi River near Wuyishan in Fujian Province. Others are more sedate.
The Yellow River, known as China's Sorrow, flows through loess plains raising the level of the riverbed by as much as 15 metres above the surrounding lands, whilst the Li River near Guilin passes through an amazing landscape of limestone peaks.
