Northern Thailand

WHY VISIT NORTHERN THAILAND

Visit this region of Thailand to discover a slower pace of life and ancient cities such as Chiang Mai and Sukhothai and the rural capital of Chiang Rai. Rice paddy, rushing rivers and mountain landscapes make this region feel cooler and greener than other parts of Thailand. Smart hotels in central Chiang Mai and beautiful resorts on the outskirts of Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai make it a wonderfully comfortable addition to a Thai holiday.

ABOUT NORTHERN THAILAND

The area around Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai are home to several hill tribes. Each of the tribes offers its own fascinating traditions and rituals; the Karen, the largest of Thailand’s tribes are known for wearing woven V-neck tunics and turbans of various natural colours while the Hmong tribe are known for their intricate embroidery. Over the years the tribal groups have succumb to tourism and a large amount of their authenticity has faded, however with some insider knowledge and a little effort you can still visit tradition hill tribe villages.

The green lush scenery makes walking in this region a delight but, for those that prefer, elephant treks are also available and small mahout courses. Why not try venturing into Myanmar for a day or two or continue with a journey into Laos and take a boat down the Mekong River to Luang Prabang.

  • Stop at the Elephant Parade House when visiting Chiang Mai and paint your own elephant, helping save these engandered animals
  • Visit the Hall of Opium Museum, set up to provide education and information on the opium trade that once plagued this region.
  • Learn to ‘drive’ an elephant on a mahout course, done in a more local style or in luxury at the Four Seasons Tented Camp Chiang Rai.
  • Trek to a local village and stay the night to gain an insight into life in this rural region.
  • Chiang Mai is home to some delicious regional food so a cooking lesson in the market is fun

Beyond the ordinary

Travel to less visited regions of Thailand taking in historical towns and cities. Travel along ancient and stunning mountain roads with views of green paddy fields, old ‘Teak Mansions’ and the ancient city of Lampang.
