Fly Nairobi to Dar Es Salaam
Travel from Dar Es Salaam to Selous Game Reserve (Air Transfer Journey)
Set around the lush riverine ecosystem of the Rufiji River, the Selous Game Reserve is the largest in Africa. The central area of the reserve offers the best game viewing with the river drawing an excellent diversity of plains game, predators and superb birdlife. The reserve allows boat safaris, fishing for tiger fish and walking safaris in addition to the more traditional 4x4 adventures. This gives a completely different perspective to the safari and allows for a far more interactive experience.
Activities at Azura Selous
Explore the Selous Game Reserve on foot, by boat and in open game vehicles. Take game drives along the bumpy dirt tracks that crisscross the reserve, led by an expert guide. Due to the hot climate, set off twice a day - once at dawn and again at dusk.
This vast area of wild, rugged landscape covers a huge swathe of southern Tanzania. Home to a diverse range of wildlife, this expanse of savannah and woodland is home to herds of elephants, prides of lions, leopards and wild dogs. The birding is also spectacular, with more than 440 species found in the park. These include palm-nut vultures, goliath herons and rock pratincoles.
Walking safaris offer a different experience, highlighting the smaller intricacies of the bush and helping to explain the role of different plants and animals in the local ecosystem. The flat landscape makes for easy walking, with a flexible schedule meaning walks can vary in length.
The Ruaha River flows in front of the lodge, offering the chance to set out on a boating safari downstream. Float quietly through the heart of the park, spotting animals on the banks and in the water. The river is also an excellent spot for fishing (equipment provided), with electric catfish and tiger fish commonly caught here.
