Big game and secluded beach escape

14 days

from £6,295pp

Nowhere in East Africa can one link such a great safari destination so easily with a tropical island getaway than in Tanzania. An effortless transition makes it easy to be watching lion as the sun rises and whales as the sun sets.

  • Visit iconic areas of Tanzania
  • Easily combine prime bush and beach locations
  • Savour excellent cuisine
  • Stay in effortless luxury

Although the flight to Tanzania is not direct, this safari starts in London in the evening and the first glimpse of wildlife starts at lunchtime the next day. It is relatively easy to get to Selous Game Reserve, one of the largest reserves in the world and home to a wide variety of the wildlife species which make an African safari special. In addition, world class accommodation and guiding make Selous Game reserve a real favourite.

Not too far away and within easy reach is the island archipelago of Zanzibar, neighboured in the south by Mafia and in the north by Pemba Islands. Exciting small aircraft transfers easily connect the Selous and Pemba Island where the famous Fundu Lagoon resort is situated. Fundu Lagoon is a haven of tranquillity perched on a hillside overlooking the Pemba channel, which is heralded as one of the best diving spots in the world. Sun worshipping, deep sea fishing, kayaking, diving. These are just a few of the activities which fill time at Fundu which is lovingly cossetted by ever attentive owners, managers and staff.

Set around the lush riverine ecosystem of the Rufiji River, the Selous Game Reserve is the largest in Africa. The central area of the reserve offers the best game viewing with the river drawing an excellent diversity of plains game, predators and superb birdlife. The reserve allows boat safaris, fishing for tiger fish and walking safaris in addition to the more traditional 4x4 adventures. This gives a completely different perspective to the safari and allows for a far more interactive experience.

Activities at Azura Selous
Explore the Selous Game Reserve on foot, by boat and in open game vehicles. Take game drives along the bumpy dirt tracks that crisscross the reserve, led by an expert guide. Due to the hot climate, set off twice a day - once at dawn and again at dusk.

This vast area of wild, rugged landscape covers a huge swathe of southern Tanzania. Home to a diverse range of wildlife, this expanse of savannah and woodland is home to herds of elephants, prides of lions, leopards and wild dogs. The birding is also spectacular, with more than 440 species found in the park. These include palm-nut vultures, goliath herons and rock pratincoles.

Walking safaris offer a different experience, highlighting the smaller intricacies of the bush and helping to explain the role of different plants and animals in the local ecosystem. The flat landscape makes for easy walking, with a flexible schedule meaning walks can vary in length.

The Ruaha River flows in front of the lodge, offering the chance to set out on a boating safari downstream. Float quietly through the heart of the park, spotting animals on the banks and in the water. The river is also an excellent spot for fishing (equipment provided), with electric catfish and tiger fish commonly caught here.

Travel from Selous Game Reserve to Pemba Island (Air Transfer Journey)

Due to a unique mix of ancestral influences, Pemba has a varied culture and history - quite apart from its rich marine environment, it is a fascinating island to visit.

Pemba also offers excellent scuba diving - its vertiginous drop-offs, untouched coral and very abundant marine life make for exhilarating dive experiences. Equally, however, the chance to explore its wooded slopes and lush valleys should not be missed.

Jackie Pearson, Travel Expert

"Every part of our trip was the highlight and it is not possible for us to point out just one thing, event or place."

"However, we received a magnificent surprise of a helicopter ride between camps in Botswana which meant a flight over the delta and an opportunity to see the delta and how it is formed. It was a wonderful surprise organised by Jackie and we were both absolutely overjoyed with the opportunity. I do not believe that there was more that could have been done as we had a magnificent trip."

"Jackie was excellent- she listened and was very knowledgeable."
