This was my second trip to the Middle East since joining Steppes Travel and one that has reconfirmed my love affair with this part of the world.
Yes the ancient history is amazing but it's the people who make these countries special. There are few places where you will find such genuine friendliness and generosity and receive such a warm welcome.
Highlights of this trip for me were numerous but if I had to name a few they would be:

Petra - I am not always a fan of ancient sites but this remarkable city, known as the Rose City, really did enthral me. The Nabataeans couldn't have chosen a more spectacular spot to carve their intricate temples and tombs. The natural colours and shapes of the rocks are beautiful. This mixed with its ongoing history as home to the Bedouin people who lived in the caves here for many years and still earn their living selling souvenirs and providing 'air-conditioned' taxi rides on their donkeys or camels, really did bring Petra to life.

Damascus and Aleppo - Syria's two main cities just ooze charm and atmosphere, I could have wandered round the labyrinth of alleyways and souks for hours. It's like stepping back in time, surrounded by the vibrant colours and smells of spices and perfumes, veiled women, loaded donkeys and the ever-present welcoming smiles of the people.

Wadi Rum - I would have loved to spend longer here camping under the stars but my early morning 4x4 tour was enough to give me a taste. Beautiful desert landscape of rocky mountains and orange sands with ancient rock carvings and black goat hair tents dotting the otherwise quiet landscape. Taking a hot sweet tea in one of these tents with the Bedouin owner is an essential experience - tea is part of the social culture of the Bedouins and I was constantly offered 'more tea?' throughout my trip.
There are so many other reasons to visit these countries and if you have never been to the Middle East I urge you to go soon. I will definitely return again to experience more of the warm hospitality and traditions.
