My Travel Stories

Sue cold in Spitsbergen Sue colder in Wrangle Island

Having spent the best part of 5 years on my 'gap year' working in travel seemed the natural progression. I am most at home travelling to remote wilderness areas of the globe. With a life-long passion for wildlife I love to get up close either by kayak or on foot. My travels have taken me to all seven continents. Most recently travelling to the Russian Far East along the Chukotka coast and up to Wrangel and Herald Islands, where I was lucky enough to encounter 103 polar bears! I have also voyaged to Spitsbergen, Antarctica, the Canadian High Arctic and Baja California's Sea of Cortez on expedition vessels, along with sailing the Amazon Basin and paddling down the Yukon. I hope to go whale and bear watching in Alaska next.

Countries you sell?
All regions of the Arctic, Antarctica, Baja California, The Amazon & the Panama Canal.

What has been your favourite travel experience?
Observing a silverback and his family of mountain gorillas in Zaire (now DRC). The youngsters were as curious of us as we were of them.

The best hotel/lodge that you have stayed in?
Kicheche Mara Bush Camp, Kenya. Un-pretentious rustic luxury surrounded by spectacular wildlife and top class guides.

What has been your most remote travel experience?
Landing on Wrangel Island in Far East Russia and encountering five polar bears during our walk.

Most embarrassing travel experience?
Walking onto the bridge of the my Antarctic ship and being so exited I turned and bear hugged my husband, only to discover it was actually the rather surprised Russian captain!

Your one luxury when you travel?
I never go anywhere without a fleece, possibly as I tend to pick cold destinations.

What’s your best piece of travel advice?
Always maintain a sense of adventure, all the best travel yarns start with something unexpected or something going wrong!

Where you would like to visit next and why?
Having seen lots of polar bears in Spitsbergen and Russia I hope to see plenty of Grizzly Bears in Alaska. I am also keen to see sea otters, whales and eagles but will be equally happy just kayaking in magnificent wilderness.
