What has been your favourite travel experience?
I was lucky enough to help with an Indian elephant census in Nagarhole National Park and gained special access to a remote part of the park not open to tourists. We observed several herds of wild elephants and got an incredible close-up view of their behaviour, so much so that while trying to take a photograph of a mother and calf I was mock charged!
The best hotel/lodge that you have stayed in?
A bed fit for a princess in the atmospheric Maharani Suite of the Deogarh Mahal hotel – the former palace of the Rawats of Deogarh. Sitting with the Royal family who are still in residence and listening to their stories of India, and then getting a lift in a bullock cart to their Fort Seengh Sagar for a Sundowner.
What has been your most remote travel experience?
Snorkeling with Orcas in a dry suit in the Arctic Circle – with ice forming on the inside of the Zodiac….runs a close second to 6 months living in a tent in the Indian jungle managing a wildlife camp. Every day we drew water from our underground well, cooked with our home grown organic vegetables and our chai was made with milk from the camp’s cow!
Most embarrassing travel experience?
Stepping off a local boat in the Gili Islands in Indonesia and the weight of my rucksack sending me flying backwards into the sea!
Your one luxury when you travel?
Power monkey explorer – a pocket sized solar panel charger and speaker system for my iPod.
What’s your best piece of travel advice?
Embrace the experience – the journey is often as exciting as the final destination, be respectful of local customs and always keep your sense of humour!
Where you would like to visit next and why?
Haridwar for the Kumbh Mela, which only happens every 4 years.
