Snowmobile to Nordenskiöld Lodge

A true expedition lodge with no running water or electricity, Nordenskiöld Lodge is only accessible by sled or snowmobile in the winter months. Since this is the most northern commercial lodge in the world, it is a remarkable place to experience true wilderness. This Arctic expedition isn’t just for adults; teens aged 16 and above are also able (and encouraged) to join the ride.

Explore the Arctic Wilderness

Drive over glaciers, mountains and frozen fjords that are miles from civilisation, crossing an inhospitable white and blue landscape. If the weather and ice conditions are favourable, head out to the abandoned Russian mining town of Pyramiden. This once thriving historic town was evacuated in 1998, and since the Russians took nothing with them when they abandoned the city everything remains as it was back then.

While navigating north towards the glaciers in Olav V land, you may even catch a glimpse of a polar bear. In the afternoon, arrive at a remote lodge and soak up the magical scenery before dinner and a traditional sauna session.

Accommodation

Below you can see some of the wonderful places we have recommended for this journey.

Nordenskiold Lodge £££££

  • Spitsbergen

Located on the shores of Isfjorden, at the edge of the blue glacier, is Nordenskiold Lodge – a five-bedroom true expedition lodge with no running water or electricity. There is a traditional sauna to enjoy after a long cold day on the ice. During the summer months, it is possible to reach the cabin on foot or by boat (two hours to Longyearbyen harbour). In winter it is only accessible by sled or snowmobile. Activities from the lodge include climbing the glacier, skiing, and days exploring by dog-sled, visiting abandoned mining towns such as the ghost town of Pyramiden just a few miles away.

Basecamp Hotel £££££

  • Spitsbergen

Basecamp Hotel is set in the middle of Longyearbyen and is furnished with driftwood from a Russian settlement to give the feeling of a Spitsbergen hunter’s cottage. Breakfast is served around a long table in The Travellers Club, while the Cognac Attic, with its glass ceiling, is flooded with arctic light. The lodge is bed and breakfast only, but the town is home to a selection of restaurants ranging from coffee houses serving Italian dishes to gourmet meals at a Huseta.
