Archaeological Sites
Mexico is an archaeological paradise. From Mexico City down to the borders of Belize and Guatemala you will be staggered by the sheer number of archaeological sites. Many are manicured and rebuilt but with little effort you go off the beaten track and explore some of the lesser-known sites. Many different cultures existed in Mexico from the Aztecs in the north and the Olmecs in the east, to the Mixtecs in the west and the Mayas in the south.

Diving
Diving is practised off most of Mexico's coastline but Quintana Roo and Baja California, are particularly noteworthy. The first offers warm water reefs close to the shore and visibility of over 30m whereas Southern Baja has adventurous diving in deep waters. You can also dive in the cenotes, a system of underground lagoons, caves and rivers. The cenotes provide a unique experience to dive in both fresh and salt water and see the amazing light show afforded by the sunrays coming in through the gaps in the cave ceilings.

Fiestas
Fiestas abound in Mexico and often involve colourful scenes of traditional dancers or unique religious processions. Many religious celebrations have their roots in the pre-Hispanic era, while most civic holidays reflect modern historical events. Particularly noteworthy are the Quelaguetza in Oaxaca (mid-July) and the Day of the Dead celebrated all over Mexico on 2nd November.

Sea kayaking
The warm waters of the Sea of Cortes off Baja California are kayak heaven. You require no special prior expertise and can take off on your own in quiet waters for day trips. You may see large groups of stingrays, sea lions, dolphins and could be lucky enough to encounter grey whales or hammerhead sharks.

Surfing
Some of the world's most exhilarating surfing can be experienced along Mexico's Pacific coast. The highlights are the huge Hawaiian-size surf that pounds the Baja shoreline and the renowned Mexican Pipeline at Puerto Escondido. There are numerous possibilities ranging from developed beaches to deserted bays accessible only by four-wheel drive vehicles. Surfing is best in the spring and summer, particularly between July and October.

Climbing
The big snow-capped volcanoes are within easy reach of Mexico City. The season is October to May and crampons, ice axes and ropes are often required for a safe ascent. Recently also it is worth noting that Popocatepetl (5,452m) and Colima (3,842m) are sporadically erupting, however Iztaccihuatl and Pico de Orizaba are still high altitude challenges.
