Archaeology
Excavations in the 1970s brought to light the true extent of Belize's archaeological importance. Overseas universities, countries and the European Union are supporting government protection of this heritage. Ongoing excavations have uncovered fantastic sites that display magnificent hieroglyphic friezes, massive temples and pyramids and endless shady plazas. Recent discovery shows that sites such as Caracol surpassed even the military might of the famous Tikal.
Diving
Home to some of the earth's most unique geological formations, Belize's underwater world is a profusion of colours and exotic marine life. Belize owns the right to claim the largest and most prolific barrier reef in the Northern Hemisphere. It is home to nearly 400 species of fish, more than 70 types of hard corals and 3 magnificent atolls with one being the fantastic Blue Hole. Divers will find an underwater environment of pinnacled mid-reefs, shallow sea gardens and deep, precipitous walls. It really is a diver's paradise.
Fishing
Hundreds of square miles of good fishing grounds lure anglers to Belize time and time again. What makes Belize so appealing is the vast diversity of fishing areas and the unique terrain where they are found. There are the rivers teeming with jewfish, cubera snapper and snook, the flats offer permit and bonefish and the offshore waters provide opportunities for baracuda, shark and tuna fishing. Belize is one of the few destinations in the world where anglers have a chance at claiming the revered Grand Slam of fly-fishing - catching a bonefish, permit and tarpon in one day.
