Typical Day on Safari (W)The maxim 'the early bird catches the worm' is very apt to safaris. The wildlife is most active first thing in the morning so an early wake up call for a morning game drive is essential. Following a morning drive and a leisurely lunch there will be time to relax before venturing out in the late afternoon for another drive and to take sundowners in the bush. Having raised a glass to the setting sun, the journey back to lodge will be spent spotting nocturnal wildlife. While game drives provide the best chances of seeing most wildlife, Sabi Sands offers great opportunities for game walks with experienced rangers.Named after the two principal rivers which flow through it, namely the Sabie and the Sand, the Sabi Sands covers a vast area of pristine African wilderness and is part of the Greater Kruger National Park where the Big Five roam freely. The sustenance of these rivers ensures that this area enjoys one of the highest and most diverse concentrations of wildlife in Africa.
Days at Chitwa ChitwaSpend time exploring the Sabi Sand Game Reserve, a private concession found in the southern reaches of the Kruger National Park. Integrated into the larger park, this biodiverse wilderness is home to a wealth of wildlife - big and small. Set out on expertly guided game drives early in the morning and late in the afternoon, in specially adapted Land Rovers. Morning drives take you through the dew-dusted landscape as the diurnal animals begin to awaken. Spot elephants, rhinos, buffalos, lions, wild dogs and cheetahs. On the other hand, afternoon drives leave camp as the heat of the day dies away and nocturnal predators begin to awaken. Watch as the sun sets over the wild landscape, stopping for sundowners as the sky grows dusky crimson. As night approaches, begin to look out for the reserve's more elusive species, including leopards, civets, wild cats and genets. Leopards are a particular highlight here, with the Sabi Sands considered one of the best places to spot these iconic cats. Also set out on morning bush walks, led by expert guides. These usually take place between drives, but longer walks can also be arranged, or they can be incorporated into a game drive. Bush walks are the perfect opportunity to see the bush at close quarters, providing experiences that can only be found outside of a vehicle. Identify endemic flora, spot some of the more than 350 species of birds and stumble across big game whilst exploring on foot.
Activities for the day at Sabi SandsToday enjoy your last day - perhaps taking a bush walk under the guidance of the professional rangers and trackers. A trip to the Dixi village are available to experience the Chitwa Trust initiatives.
