St Kitts and its neighbour Nevis are wonderful ‘old’ Caribbean islands with an extraordinary history dating back to the 15th century. Relatively unspoiled, they offer so much more than the typical Caribbean beach resorts and have many places to explore.
St Kitts has some great dive sites, with reefs, walls, caves and wrecks; with the deepest waters close to shore, there isn’t a need to go far. The rainforests provide wonderful hiking trails with or without guides and there is a full day hike to the dormant volcano crater at the centre of the island. Being blessed with a myriad of complex ecosystems, there is an abundance of birdlife – some 203 different species.
Nevis on the other hand, is sleepier and more relaxed, offering a real get-away from it all experience. Still covered with ruins of the sugar plantations of yesteryear, there are 21.5 miles of marked trail around the island which take in many points of interest. Green vervet monkeys are a common sight too.
Still relatively quiet and not widely known, these two small islands offer a mix of wonderful beaches (some are black volcanic sand), magnificent rainforest and offshore activities. Nevis is the quieter of the two and remains one of the most unspoilt in the Caribbean.
Located in the eastern Caribbean, surrounded by Antigua, Barbuda, St Eustatius and Montserrat, St Kitts is an island of just 69 square miles which Nevis is just 36. As well as some beautiful beaches, there are nature trails through rainforests and exploration of former plantation houses which have been restored to their former glory, and there are now boutique hotels or restaurants that are keen to tell of their fascinating history.
