Although perhaps neither as exotic as Sarawak nor as historically appealing, a most remarkable aspect of this region is Mount Kinabalu and its sheer diversity of flora and fauna. Sabah is dominated by Mount Kinabalu, the highest mountain in South East Asia, and those who make the technically easy, if strenuous, climb are rewarded with magnificent views. Visit Sukau, a coastal forest reserve, where the weird and wonderful proboscis monkey can be found. Nearby lies Turtle Island where you can swim, snorkel and, at nightfall, watch turtles coming ashore or hatchlings being released. Visit the Orang-Utans at Sepilok and undertake a tree canopy walk. End with a rest at the Shangri La's Rasa Ria resort or as an option go to one of the surrounding islands for some of the best diving in the world.
