Rajasthan Rajasthan

Sunset over Taj Mahal, IndiaPushkar Fair, Camels, India
While much of India fell under the yoke of the Mogul Empire (1550- 1862), the princely states within what we now know as Rajasthan either fought off their Islamic oppressors or concluded treaties in order to retain their sovereignty.

Today, this Hindu legacy is apparent in both the architecture and culture of the region. Forts and palaces abound and, while many have been transformed into small heritage hotels and are run by their princely owners, there are also larger and better known alternatives, such as the beautiful Lake Palace Hotel in Udaipur and the Unmaid Bhawan in Jodphur. As much of Rajasthan is desert, the vibrant colours of the local tribal people stand out against the pale background, providing a vivid and stark contrast.

Every November, just before the full moon, the small town of Pushkar plays host to one of Indias most famous religious festivals and cattle fairs, creating what is an unforgettable spectacle of life.
