Quito in Ecuador is the second highest capital in Latin America, with the equator passing just north of the city. Lying in a long narrow valley, the setting is dramatised by the slopes of the Pichincha Volcano to one side and the gorge of Machangara on the other. The old UNESCO city has beautiful colonial buildings, ornate churches, plazas and cobbled streets and its highlights include Independence Square, the beautiful La Compania Jesuit church and the Panecillo Hill with its spectacular views over Quito.
