Ten thousand years ago orangutans - 'man of the forest', were found throughout Southeast Asia, ranging all the way into Southern China. Since then their range has shrunk dramatically, and the species, which is the only great ape found outside of Africa is now only found in relic populations on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra.
These wonderful creatures are one of many endangered animals on our planet.
The Sepilok rehabilitation centre in Malaysian Borneo is the largest of only 4 sanctuaries in the world where you can still view these fascinating animals at close proximity. Orphaned and injured orangutans are brought to Sepilok where the centre facilitates their return to the wild. Today around 25 young orphan orangutans are housed in the nurseries, in addition to those free in the reserve. The orangutans are fed twice daily from platforms in the forest, this feeding is just to supplement what they can't find for themselves in the jungle and they are free to return as and when they wish.
Within the 43 square km's of protected land visitors can walk out into the rainforest along raised wooden walkways to the feeding platforms from where you can observe them in their natural habitat. there is also a visitors centre which gives an interesting background on the orangutans and the centre itself.
A short 5 minute walk away from the centre is the quaint accommodation of the Sepilok Nature Resort. The resort offers timber chalets which sit round a beautiful natural lake and it isn't unheard of for guests to wake up in the morning with an orangutan or a few pig-tail Macaques sitting on the verandah.
