West of the Waterberg Plateau Park, the vast plains are occasionally broken by the remnants of the Etjo sandstone that once covered large areas of northern Namibia. Nestled amongst one of these relics - the Ombokoro Mountains - lies Okonjima Lodge, a Herero name meaning, "place of the baboons". This is a family run guest lodge and the home of the AfriCat Foundation, a charitable organization that rescues and relocates problem cheetah, leopard and other cats from farmland to conservation areas.
Okonjima Lodge is divided into Bush Camp, Main Camp, The Villa and the Bush Suite.
Main camp consists of 10 luxuriously appointed double en-suite stone rooms and 3 en-suite twin Meru tents. Main camp was the original Hanssen-family farmhouse, reconstructed as a lodge in 1992. All 10 double rooms overlook a lush garden and the open-fire entertainment area.
At Bush Camp, situated at the edge of the wilderness area, some 3km from Main camp, there are 8 double stone/thatch cottages, which offer guests complete privacy, and the unique design of canvas panelling which may be rolled up allows a stunning 180°view of the bushveld. In front of each chalet, a birdbath is visited by a variety of birds and small mammals.
Both camps have a night hide for viewing some of the areas smaller residents including honey badgers, porcupine and caracal. Regrettably children under 12 are not permitted in Bush or Main Camp.
Two new additions to the Okonjima collection are; The Villa, an exclusive self-contained villa with a private chef, guide and vehicle. Sleeping quarters can be arranged to accommodate groups from 2 to 8 adults plus 5 children (8 years+). Overlooking a natural waterhole, the villa is situated in a secluded wilderness area approximately 10km from Okonjima Main Camp. The villa has 2 separate, private suites, together with 2 select, en-suite bedrooms in the 'Main House'. The villas are designed for small groups/families wanting absolute privacy.
The graceful Main House at Okonjima Lodge consists of an up-to-date kitchen with both gas and electrical cooking facilities and an endless supply of ice from a double door refrigerator. The living spaces are punctuated by a spacious lounge and dining area with an open, wood-burning fireplace. Two luxury en-suite bedrooms, each with an inside shower and a spectacular, outside bush-shower, together with a beautiful bath-with-a-view.
The Main House also sports a magnificent infinity pool, surrounded on three sides by African, red teak decking and a walkway to an open, shaded 'Sala' - for some serious birding and afternoon napping - incorporating a roof fan to stir the gentle breeze that crosses the adjoining waterhole.
Two separate, exquisite, thatched suites situated approximately 35m - 50m on either side of 'The Main House' are completed by a well-stocked mini bar in each Suite. Fittingly, 3 of the 4 bedrooms have magnificent, wheeled king size beds, for rolling out onto the terraces to sleep under the stars.
The Bush Suite is located close to Bush Camp and offers the same levels of exclusivity for couples or groups not exceeding four. The Suite has 2 separate, private, and en-suite bedrooms under a magnificent thatched roof. The living space comprises a spacious lounge, a dining area under thatch or outside under natural shade and an open, wood-burning fireplace. A wide veranda overlooks the uniquely designed 13-metre pool. Like the Villa, the Suite is entirely private and has its own chef, guide and landrover.
Highlights of the Okonjima experience include radio-tracking rescued cheetah and leopard on foot with excellent photographic opportunities, visiting the AfriCat centre, joining a guide on the informative and interactive Bushman trail, self-guided walking trails and birding.
