Offbeat Safaris, started by Tristan and Lucinda Voorspuy in 1990, operate adventurous riding and landrover safaris from luxury mobile-tented camps in the more remote areas of Maasailand and Laikipia.
Game is plentiful and landrovers are always available for game drives. They also encourage game walks conducted with a knowledgeable armed guide conversant with the habits and likely reactions of the game, in any situation.
Tristan has been running safaris since 1981 and is an enthusiastic naturalist and guide. He spent six years in the Household Cavalry before coming to Kenya and, like Lucinda, has lived around horses all his life. Guests can ride two hundred miles without seeing a fence post, combining the magnificent scenery with the thrill of riding amongst teeming herds of game, which is something no horse lover coming to Africa should miss. The horses are home or ranch bred, thoroughbred and thoroughbred cross and all are schooled to a high standard and are responsive, tough and fit.
The safaris cover twenty to thirty miles a day so guests need to be competent riders. There are opportunities for long canters and gallops and big game is often encountered. As the name implies, guests camp far off the beaten track, supported by lorries and Landrovers.
The campsites are remote and secluded and are left just as they were found. However, adventure is blended with comfort and all the food is fresh with three course meals prepared by the very experienced safari cook on an open fire. Bread is baked in the safari oven daily and there is ice in the drinks. Accommodation is in spacious double sleeping tents each with its own toilet. Hot showers are readily available after a long day in the saddle.
