Oaxaca is one of the prettiest towns in Mexico and capital of a state inhabited by a million Indians of at least 14 different ethnic groups. It was founded by the Spanish in the 1600s and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
It combines colonial charm with its Zapotec and Mixtec roots. You can admire Santo Domingo cathedral, enjoy a shot of tequila in the central zocalo, buy chocolate in the market or go out into the hills to explore the archaeological sites of Mitla and Monte Alban.
Every year in July, the Guelaguetza folk dance festival and feast takes place and is a wonder of traditional dances, beliefs, costumes, music and foods.
Built in 1576 the Santa Catalina Convent in Oaxaca has been carefully converted into the luxury Camino Real.
The building of the Ex Convento San Pablo began in July 1529 and was completed in September 1547 as a convent for the order of Dominican nuns.
