Huaorani win sustainable tourism award

Huaorani Ecolodge, Huaorani People

The winners of the Virgin Holidays Responsible Tourism Awards were announced recently. Not only is Steppes Discovery very proud to have been Highly Commended for “Best for Conservation of Wildlife and Habitats” but we are also very happy that our good friends at the Huaorani Ecolodge in the Ecuadorian Amazon have also been Highly Commended for “Best Accommodation for Local Communities”.

This ecolodge was spearheaded by the Huaorani Community itself and the judges were impressed by how this community have been able to use tourism to defend the forest against loggers, oil exploration and slash and burn. They were also impressed by the latest efforts of the Huaoranis and their partners in securing a new 55,000 hectare reserve.

Part of these latest efforts is a project, in collaboration with Steppes Discovery, to monitor the density of various wildlife species in the area such as jaguars, ocelots and others with the aim to further scientific knowledge and, more importantly, work towards the conservation of these species and their environment.

Join Steppes Discovery on an exclusive trip to the Huaorani Ecolodge where you will be donating camera-traps essential towards the monitoring of wildlife density and can assist in securing data from these camera traps as well as getting meet the Huaoranis and learn about their traditions and lifestyle in the headwaters of the Amazon.
