Cuba has fascinated travellers for years and has become a top destination for adventure-hungry foreigners. The country is a haven for eco-tourists and huge efforts are being made to ensure that its beaches remain pristine and that expansion is kept to a minimum.
Laws have been passed insisting that any development of new tourism facilities must be done in adherence to the country's environmental policies which helps Cuba to maintain its unique character. There is so much to enjoy in this mysterious island nation that it is often difficult to know where to start but for most, there is no better way to kick of a trip than in the capital, Havana.
The largest city in the Caribbean, Havana is oozing with culture and is happy to live up to its reputation of a place of fun and relaxation. There is plenty to see, from museums and palaces to public squares, churches and fortresses. Old Havana is awash with stunning architecture with its narrow streets boasting buildings dating back to the 17th century. Its fortresses are even older, with the Castillo del Morro, located on the entrance to Havana Bay, believed to have been built in 1587.
The area and its fortifications were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1982 and attract thousands of people from across the world each year. Other must-sees include the spectacular Great Theatre of Havana or - Gran Teatro de La Habana - where visitors can enjoy shows from the National Ballet of Cuba as well as opera and drama performances.
Havana is renowned for its vibrant nightlife and no trip to the city is complete without relaxing in one its many bars with a Cuba Libre cocktail or glass of Havana Club Rum. Those looking for a night on the tiles can head to the world-famous Tropicana cabaret and nightclub where they will join the likes of Ernest Hemingway, Jimmy Durante and Marlon Brando in enjoying the lavish shows held there.
Heading out of Havana is yet another World Heritage site the stunning Vinales Valley which has been granted protection due to its outstanding landscape and traditional agricultural techniques which have been passed down from generation to generation. For outdoor activities enthusiasts Vinales Valley has plenty to offer including hiking and rock climbing. It is also home to Cuba's largest cave system which is also regularly explored by adventurous travellers. Animals and plants thrive in this peaceful location with birds such as hummingbirds, the Cuban trogon and the mockingbird all making their home here.
For those looking for a more relaxed trip a few days on one of Cuba's many fine beaches comes highly recommended. With its pristine white sand and azure waters, the island's coastline is just waiting to be explored. Some of the most beautiful are at Playas del Este which is located just a 20 minute drive from Havana. Megano beach is ideal for those looking for some peace and quiet with just one small bar serving refreshments.
