South of Lima along the coast, set in a green valley surrounded by mountains, is the small oasis town of Nazca. Overlooking the town is Cerro Blanco (2,078m) the highest sand dune in the world, a great place for sandboarding and dune riding.
However, undoubtedly the most outstanding point about this place is the 32 gigantic and mysterious line drawings etched into the desert plains by the Nazca people around 400 BC and discovered in 1939.
These geoglyphs spread over an area of approximately 500 square kilometers, and dipict not only parallels but also geometric drawings and figures. Among the principal figures are a monkey (90 meters), pelican (135 meters), Condor (135 meters), Spider (42 meters), and Lizard (180 meters). Best seen from the air, these huge, unique designs are still the subject of much speculation. Various theories have arisen as to the origin of these figures. The most accepted view is that of Dr. Maria Reiche, a German mathematician who studied the lines for more than 50 years, sustaining that the figures serve as an astronomic calendar.
