Day 1

Fly London to Marrakech

Travel from Marrakech to the Atlas Mountains

A journey time of one hour.

Stretching over a thousand miles across Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia, the Atlas Mountains are a vision of inspiring, often stark beauty. Home to some of the highest peaks in North Africa, this is a complex landscape of jagged ridges and deep, narrow valleys - dropping away steeply to the north and, to the south, sloping gently into the endless expanses of the Sahara.

From the ancient city of Marrakech, the Atlas skyline stretches across the horizon, creating a stunning backdrop. Toubkal, North Africa's highest mountain, is only 50 miles south of Marrakech.

The High Atlas has been inhabited for thousands of years by a pastoral people known as the Berbers. They traditionally live in small villages of flat-roofed sun-baked mud houses, usually situated atop steep mountain slopes. Speaking Berber, Arabic, and French, they are as interesting and welcoming as they are knowledgeable of the mountains.

You will be staying at Kasbah du Toubkal

Day 2

A Day at the Kasbah sketching
Today will be spent learning new skills and sketching from the Kasbah set amidst beautiful mountain scenery. There are many wonderful and varied subjects to study, ranging from the characterful walnut grove below the Kasbah and the fruit orchard terraces planted with purple irises, to the dramatic views of the snow-capped Mount Toubkal. A leisurely day to absorb new surroundings and to improve on sketching techniques.

You will be staying at Kasbah du Toubkal

Day 3

Berber Village Visit
This morning delve into local Berber culture with a walk in the mountains to the local village of Aremd, situated above the Kasbah. A wonderful place to depict a colourful village scene and perhaps a quick portrait over coffee during a friendly exchange with the locals. Accompanied by a mountain guide and mule support to carry any bags, as well as a delicious picnic lunch, this is a wonderful way to explore the mountain scenery.

You will be staying at Kasbah du Toubkal

Day 4

Imlil Village & Afternoon Sketching
A short walk today, to the nearby village of Imlil situated at the foot of the Kasbah. Another perfect opportunity to sketch local life. Outsiders to the mountains are constantly surprised when they encounter the warmth and openness of the villagers as they go about their everyday tasks. The way of life in many of these villages has changed little for centuries. After lunch at the Kasbah's own restaurant in Imlil, the afternoon offers a chance to indulge in a refreshing hammam back at base, relax on the roof terrace, browse through the excellent small library and take part in a further art session with Maxine.

Day 5

Travel from Atlas Mountains to Marrakech

Journey time of 1 hour

Colourful, cosmopolitan Marrakech has an authentic Moroccan feel. This is a city steeped in rich history and where ancient culture is still very much in evidence today. Intricate buildings and architectural wonders tell their own stories while, in the evenings, acrobats and story tellers gather at Djemma El Fna Square - a scene best viewed from one of many terraced coffee shops overlooking the square.

Marrakech is a true North African gem waiting to be explored.

The Old City of Marrakech
Morning drive to colourful, cosmopolitan Marrakech. Afternoon walk of the city, taking in some of the main sites with opportunities for on the spot sketching. The Koutoubia minaret, the remarkable 14th c Ben Youssef Medersa and the Bahia palace and courtyards featuring late Moorish architecture all make for interesting compositions. Visit Djemma El Fna square and the fabulous souk with its overflowing stalls and shops filled with jewellery, pottery, kaftans, dried fruits and handcrafted woods. Spend time this afternoon from the comfort of a roof top terrace overlooking the square; a great place to sketch and get a real sense of the pace of daily life in the city. See young boys taking bread to the community bakery and veiled women carrying shopping bags full of clothes and food.

You will be staying at Riad Honey

Day 6

The Majorelle Gardens
Travel by horse drawn carriage (caleche) to the Majorelle gardens. This 2 ½ acre botanical garden houses a wonderful collection of cacti, exotic plants and trees, landscaped to emphasize their natural beauty, all of which make for interesting and alternative subjects to sketch up close. There is also a very small but informative museum representing a rich display of the indigenous Berber tribes and their culture. This afternoon will be spent at leisure to further explore the city, or to make use of some independent teaching with Maxine.

You will be staying at Riad Honey

Day 7

Transfer from Marrakech to Essaouira

A journey time of approximately two and a half hours.

Essaouira is a delightful Mediterranean-style fishing port with a wide sandy bay of crashing Atlantic waves and an intriguing network of dusty whitewashed houses. Bright blue shutters and doorways line a myriad of narrow alleyways, decaying arches of days bygone and secret doorways which occasionally open out of the hustle and bustle of a tiny square.

The beach which, although perhaps a little too windy to sunbathe on, offers miles and miles of unbeatable walking and great swimming - the windsurfing championships are hosted here each year.

Venture into Essaouira and spend time in the main square, drinking in the cafes, shopping in the very friendly souq or exploring the old medina.

Essaouira has a very bohemian feel & moves at a slow pace - the town boasts many budding artists who exhibit their work throughout the town. Aswell as some great artwork Essaouira is also renowned for its red cedar and lemonwood cabinet making and marquetry work and the famous Argan oil, produced from olives grown on trees which are endemic to this region.

Tour the City
Afternoon leisurely guided walk of the town with stops for sketching. Start by exploring the traditional colourful streets, food markets and artisan workshops before stopping at the museum of Essaouira with its interesting display of artefacts and finds from the islands of Mogodor alongside Berber ethnic jewellery. Gently climb up to the Portuguese fortress for views of the rocky coastline.

You will be staying at Dar Liouba

Day 8

A day exploring Essaouira
Today will be spent sketching and photographing around Essaouira. Visit the boatyard and port, where fresh fish are brought in to the harbour each day. Find a spot in one of the cafes that line the promenade with picturesque views of the Atlantic Ocean or stop for sketching on the long stretch of sandy beach.

You will be staying at Dar Liouba

Kate Hitchen, Travel Expert

"Kate was calm and bent over backwards to accommodate my jitters about going to Kashmir in the light of tighter FCO guidelines just a few days before our departure. She was absolutely correct in advising against what I thought we should do. Several times during the holiday we said that, 'Kate was dead right about that!'."

"We asked for a rather particular kind of Indian holiday. You delivered it in full. Highlights? Honestly, each day was a highlight in itself. "
