Despite the rather ghoulish connotations and costumes, Day of the Dead is actually a celebration of life and it is an important event in the Mexican calendar. This holiday idea is a great way to witness this elaborate and colourful festival in some of the most traditional towns in Mexico.
Often confused with Halloween El Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a holiday celebrated throughout Mexico to remember friends and family who have died. In addition to the Catholic holidays All Saints day and All Souls Day, the indigenous communities of Latin America believe that at midnight on the 31st October, the Gates of Heaven open for 24hrs to allow the deceased to reunite with their families. On the 1st November the ‘angelitos’ (children) are released and on the 2nd the adults come down to join in the festivities.
This holiday idea begins in Mexico City where you will have the opportunity to explore the city with a guide and visit the great Teotihuacan pyramids. With your guide you will then be driven out to the city of Morelia which will be your base for the next few days to enjoy the Day of the Dead celebrations.
There will be the opportunity to visit a local family and learn about how they honour their ancestors at home where many build shrines and altars. Visit smaller Indian villages such as Tocuaro and Ihuatizio close to Lake Patzcuaro as well as Santa Clara del Cobre and Patzcuaro itself where you can visit the special markets selling the decorations needed for the festival. Items include sugar skulls, miniature coffins and skeleton puppets as well as masks and body paint.
However it is the cemeteries where some place the most importance and visiting these at night is an incredible experience. The cemeteries are ornately decorated, adorned with flowers and beautifully lit with candles. It is here where the families come to remember and honour the deceased, celebrating until the early hours.
From Morelia, take a flight to Ixtapa Zihuatenajo for some beach time on the Pacific coast. The beaches that scatter this beautiful bay are ideal for surfing and but most importantly the laid back lifestyle here, with excellent restaurants serving superb seafood over the water, allows for total relaxation to round off the holiday. Stay at the 5* beach resort of Capella. The rocky cliff top setting overlooking the azure waters of the Pacific Ocean makes for a secluded getaway like no other.

Drive from Mexico City to Morelia (Road Journey)
Morelia is a beautiful colonial city with an active and lively cultural scene. Founded in 1541 and named Valladolid, many wealthy Spanish moved to the city and remained, thus the city maintains its very Spanish feel. Renamed Morelia in the mid 1800s, today the city is dominated by a beautiful cathedral overlooking a large central square. The Regional Museum is worth a visit and houses an excellent mural by the Mexican painter Alfredo Alce.
