  • Learn the basics of freediving, under the expert tutelage of Hanli Prinsloo and Peter Marshall
  • Swim with whale sharks, sea lions and schools of Jack fish
  • Learn about ocean conservation from the I AM WATER team
  • Suitable for all ages and all fitness levels

Mexico’s Baja Peninsula (including Baja California and Baja California Sur) is located on the northwest Pacific coast, bordering the US State of California. It’s the world’s second largest peninsula, separated from Mexico’s mainland by the Sea of Cortez, a body of water that Jacques Cousteau once referred to as “the world’s aquarium” for it’s incredible diversity of marine species. Join the I AM WATER team through this unique opportunity to learn the art of freediving in the company of whale sharks, jack fish and sea lions.

You will be based in a beautiful hacienda, located just outside of Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, located on the southwestern tip of the peninsula. Freediving champions, Hanli Prinsloo and Peter Marshall will conduct yoga sessions and tutor you in the art of breath control in preparation for a series of open water freediving sessions in the crystalline waters of the Sea of Cortez.

WHAT IS FREEDIVING?

Freediving is an age-old practice of exploring the ocean on one breath. In contrast to scuba diving, freediving is the most natural way of being underwater, enabling you to get much closer to the animals – particularly the bigger ones – while having the least ecosystem impact.

CAN ANYONE LEARN HOW TO FREEDIVE?

Our freediving tour is structured in such a way that it allows to cater to both absolute beginners and more advanced freedivers. With multiple instructors on each trip, able to adjust to individual abilities.

HOW FIT DO YOU HAVE TO BE TO FREEDIVE?

Fitness and general health helps, but the team work with what you bring. Freediving in itself can be a strenuous activity, but it can be adjusted to suit the needs of all guests.

WHAT HAPPENS ON A TYPICAL DAY?

Each day will start or end with a yoga session to prepare your lungs and body for deep breaths and time underwater, learning to control your breathing and to slow your heart-rate. You will be offered breath-hold training on land, in water as well as deep diving sessions along a rope to prepare you for meeting the animals. As world-class freedivers we will inspire you to explore your own depths!

WHAT MARINE LIFE CAN I EXPECT TO SEE?

Swimming with Whale Sharks is one of the highlights of this region. There are several places in the world where one can swim with whale sharks and we have picked La Paz not only for its proximity to Cabo Pulmo, but also because to support the work of the local operators with regards to sustainable interactions with these precious and threatened animals.

November is also a great month for experiencing Cabo Pulmo’s massive schools of Jack Fish with pristine visibility. There are very few places in the world where one can still have the opportunity to experience vast schools of fish as they have quite simply been fished out.

Sea lions are also found in this area. You may get the opportunity to spend time watching, interacting, swimming and diving with these intelligent creatures, getting inspired by their agility and entertained by their antics.

IS THERE AN AGE LIMIT ON THE TRIP?

Freediving is for all ages and is suitable for children too.

WHAT WILL THE WEATHER BE LIKE?

With an average water temperature of approximately 80°F (27 °C), you will be able to spend plenty of time in and underwater.

IS FREEDIVING DANGEROUS?

Freediving is a potentially risky sport, however, when practised responsibly is not dangerous at all. The I AM WATER  team teach a conservative slow progression approach to freediving where you will explore your limitations and capabilities under the expert eye of top freediving instructors. The biggest risk in freediving is practising alone, something that will never be done or allowed to do, and part of your week-long course with us is safety, risk and rescue training.

Day 1

Fly London to Mexico City

Day 2

Fly Mexico City to San Jose del Cabo

Day 1 - Freediving theory training
On arrival at Los Cabos International Airport, you will be met by the I Am Water team and transferred to the private beach-front hacienda which will be your home for the week. The hacienda lies just north of Cabo Pulmo National Park (a one hour and fiteen minute drive).

On arrival, settle into your room, take a dip in the pool, jacuzzi or sea, meet with your fellow ocean travellers for the week and refresh yourself with a welcome cocktail.

In the afternoon, there will be a theoretical introduction to the art of freediving followed by your first sundown yoga session, practicing breathing techniques combined with relaxation and calming down.

This evening, gather for your first delicious and healthy dinner prepared by the private chef.

During dinner, you will be provided with more detailed information on what to expect for the next few days.

Located on the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula, San Jose del Cabo (more commonly referred to as Los Cabos in conjunction with Cabo San Lucas) is a real mixture of an authentic Mexican town with cobblestone streets radiating from the zocalo and mission church and the marina area, which is the modern face of Mexico with a host of bars, shops and restaurants.

Day 3

Freediving Training (open water)
Wake up to a light, but nutritious meal, which provides you with the necessary energy to enjoy your first open water freediving practice and animal encounters.

After a morning dive, return to the hacienda for brunch. The remainder of the afternoon is free, so you may wish to explore the white beach in front of the hacienda, relax by the pool with a book or bodysurf the small waves all around.

The sunset yoga session will be held on the roof-top terrace with stunning views over the Sea of Cortez.

Afterwards, enjoy a sundowner before getting together for dinner where you will be joined by a well-known local marine conservationist who will give an insight into his ground-breaking research and work. He is an expert on the Cabo Pulmo National Park and will be able to answer any questions you might have.

This unique region is one of the most interesting and diverse geographical areas of the world and is still very much a frontier. 760 miles long and as narrow as 30m in some places, the Baja Peninsula is home to some of the earth's most beautiful deserts, along with semi-tropical and mountainous regions, pine forests, and hundreds of miles of untouched beaches and coastline. The waters off Baja are one of the world's finest marine destinations and during the months of January to April they offer the best opportunity for whale watching.

Day 4

Whale Sharks
This morning, depart early to spend as much time as possible swimming alongside the majestic whale sharks, resident in the Bay of La Paz, located approximately two hours' drive away.
The intimate encounter and your personal interaction with these gentle giants will leave you speechless and will undoubtedly become one of your once-in-a-lifetime experiences.
A packed lunch will be provided today and there will be an opportunity to relax on a beautiful beach close-by without losing too much ocean time.
In the afternoon, travel back to the hacienda for a relaxing evening.

Day 5

Sea Lions
Again, the chef will create a light meal before you head out to sea for the next ocean adventure. Like day four, the team's dive operators will pick the group up on the beach in front of the hacienda.
There will be another full morning of deeper freediving training on the rope followed by dives with massive schools of jack fish and the opportunity to see sea lions.
You should be back at the hacienda around lunch time for another relaxed afternoon followed by yoga and dinner.

Ship Wreck
Today, you will have a similar agenda to days 3 and 5.

This afternoon, relax at the hacienda, then partake in some yoga before dinner. Maybe an early night to prepare for one more day of whale sharks.

Sue Grimwood, Travel Expert

"It was tremendously helpful to be able to speak to someone who had been to Antarctica before - Sue had been on the ship we had booked, so was able to give us some very useful information. We felt that at every stage of the booking process that we were in safe hands. "

""I was uncharacteristically worried about this trip - neurotic some might say - and I was given 110% support and help with everything. I had been disappointed by not being able to get a space on the 2014 trip and so Sue was stuck with me for 2 years - a testament to her patience and professionalism. I was confident in Sue - she knows Antarctica and speaks from experience, that is worth a huge amount. Emails, which I would send were responded to almost immediately.""
