Founded in 1561, Mendoza is situated at the foot of the Andes, on the plains of the river Mendoza. This area is renowned for its intense wine cultivation, a stopping off point for travellers between Buenos Aires and Santiago in Chile and the starting point to climb Aconcagua, the highest point in the Andes. The city makes a good base for exploring The Andes to the west and has excellent restaurants, relaxing cafes, interesting museums, countless shopping opportunities and some of the finest plazas in the county.
