Over the centuries Malawi has attracted a wide diversity of immigrants and cultures, resulting in a country of the most charming and friendly people. The word Malawi means reflected light or bright haze, an apt description of this beautiful land. Covering one fifth of the country, Lake Malawi is more like an inland sea with long sweeping beaches and clear blue waters with an incredible variety of colourful fish, while the parks support large numbers of wildlife and birds. The result is that Malawi is a holiday destination that offers a combination of excellent game viewing with the added attraction of snorkelling, diving, sailing and swimming in warm safe waters.
Nyika National Park, situated on an extensive plateau in the north has wonderful views of rolling hills, evergreen forests and cascading waterfalls. With over 200 species, it is the richest orchid area in Central Africa and the plateau boasts the highest concentration of roan antelope. In the south, on the banks of the Shire River, lies Liwonde National Park, which, with its varied habitat, is considered to be one of the finest areas for bird watching in Southern Africa.
