Majete

A conservation success story.

A little more about Majete Wildlife Reserve

Situated in the south-west of Malawi, the Shire River forms the eastern boundary to Majete, with the Mkulumadzi River cutting through the north-east corner. Low thicket covers the park, interspersed with small gullies, sandy openings and the occasional larger tree, including palms. The landscape opens up alongside the river with a mixture of rocks and sand, bordering short grasses. This verdant environment is a haven for herbivores and is packed with waterbucks, impalas, nyalas and greater kudus. The park is also home to the Big Five, thanks to the reintroduction of lions and rhinos by African Parks.

Conservation success of African Parks

Once renowned for vast animal numbers Majete Wildlife Reserve reached a nadir in the late nineties from which many conservationists thought it could not be saved. Elephants were completely eradicated, with other species reduced to critical numbers. Illegal encroachment, logging and agriculture were all taking their toll.

Enter African Parks, who in partnership with the Malawian government and local communities, took responsibility for the rehabilitation and long-term management of the reserve. With an overhaul of infrastructure and law enforcement, during the first 10 years of their management, nearly 3,000 animals were reintroduced. These numbers continue to flourish with wildlife now being used to restock neighbouring reserves.

Chris Johnston

Chris is the Conde Nast Traveller chosen Specialist for Africa.

25 years ago, my first trip to Africa took on a life of its own. I planned for three months, I stayed for two years. Whilst there, I was mistaken for a priest, attacked by sharks and arrested. Yet the countless, clattering journeys opened my eyes to the beauty of the landscapes and the grace of the people. My recent trips are undoubtedly more comfortable, but the welcome is as warm as ever and the best experiences are still those I never see coming.
