Tea Plantation, Malawi holidays

Malawi Holidays

Despite being universally acclaimed as the warm heart of Africa, primarily because of its people, Malawi has never caught on as a major holiday destination and yet it provides excellent game viewing opportunities and even a beach holiday at the end. The consequence is unparalleled space and solitude the like of which you find nowhere else in Africa. We love it and would encourage you to try.

What to expect on your Malawi holiday

Malawi is dominated by Lake Malawi which, at 360 miles long, covers one fifth of the country. It is more like an inland sea with long, inviting, sweeping beaches and crystal clear, blue water with an incredible variety of colourful fish. Along its shore are some fabulous lodges for a fresh water beach holiday with sailing and scuba diving. No stinging eyes for children.

While overall you will be struck by the natural beauty of the country and its unspoilt environment, it is probably the bird life that will be most noticeable. Of the 650 varieties of bird that are listed, some 10% are endemic, creating some of the best bird watching opportunities in southern Africa. Malawi is not a destination for ticking off wildlife but there are good herds of elephants, hippos and lots of plains game. It is great for family holidays.

Some ideas for a Malawi holiday

  • St Peter’s cathedral on Likoma Island will come as a huge surprise.
  • Spend some time in Liwonde Park, where the riverine vegetation supports good numbers of varying wildlife.
  • Explore the waterfalls, forests and rolling hills of Nyika National Park.
  • With a backdrop of Mount Mulanje, the tea plantations of Thyolo offer a wonderfully relaxing atmosphere.
  • End with a few days on the beach of Lake Malawi.

Beyond the ordinary

Mumbo Island is an exclusive camp situated on a pristine and otherwise-deserted tropical island floating on the clear waters of Lake Malawi. It is a great option for a family or group travelling together to take over the camp exclusively as you would have the whole island to yourselves.

OUR MALAWI EXPERTISE

Bridget is South African and Jackie Zimbabwean. They have spent much of their working lives travelling around southern Africa, and in particular Malawi. They both love this beautiful country and have fine judgement when it comes to creating tailormade holidays to Malawi.

A trip to Malawi is not complete without a visit to Lake Malawi, the lifeblood of the country which takes up a fifth of the land. Here boat trips, snorkelling and diving can all be enjoyed, and for those who want to relax can do so on the plentiful white sand beaches while enjoying the stunning scenery and turquoise waters.

Hippo, Elephants, Antelope, Crocodiles and an array of other rare and beautiful wildlife can all be spotted. It is also home to the extremely rare and endangered Black Rhino, which are still under a constant and very present threat of poachers.

Like with any destination we always advise keeping an eye on your belongings, especially when out in busy, crowded areas. It is sensible to leave any valuables at home. Avoid walking around at night in areas you do not know, even when out in safari camps.

The accommodation on offer ranges from basic to luxury, so there is something to suit every budget and need. As Malawi is making its name as the new destination for 2014, more high-end lodges are emerging throughout the country.
