Exclusively situated within the proclaimed Greater St Lucia Wetland Park Reserve, the largest marine lake in Africa, Makakatana remains the only privately-owned lodge set within this pristine "World Heritage Site".
Makakatana has five comfortable air-conditioned suites set privately in an indigenous forest on the banks of the lake, and a stay of two or three nights is recommended for one to experience the true wetland, beach and wildlife splendours. Enjoy an early morning mokoro safari into the pristine wetland channels, totally unique to Makakatana, and drift quietly through the meandering waters around untouched bird inhabited islands. Lake St Lucia supports 367 bird species and is one of the few places in Africa that support such a concentration of birdlife. Late afternoon hippo and crocodile safari drives and boat cruises are also offered.
Explore the golden, unpolluted coastal beaches flanked by some of the highest dune forests in the world and enjoy swimming and snorkelling in these pristine waters amidst tropical coral reefs. Turtle watching is available in season and full day safaris can be arranged to the world famous Hluhuwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve where the Big Five can be viewed. Children aged 12 and over are welcome.
