Loisaba Loisaba

Loisaba starbedLoisaba House bathroom view
Loisaba Lodge was originally built as the Kenya home of Count Ancilotto. Perched high on the edge of the Laikipia plateau, the vast splendor of the views defy description. A thousand feet below, a water hole draws families of elephant, greater Kudu, Oryx and Giraffe while at night, only the calls of Lion, Leopard and Hyena break the silence of the stars. Loisaba Lodge itself has been extensively refurbished to provide exclusive accommodation for up to twelve guests in six rooms each seemingly suspended off the edge of the escarpment. Decorated in subtle, ethnic moods, each room has its own en-suite bathroom and a large private deck or veranda. In tune with the relaxed informality of life here, meals are served wherever you may choose, at a large communal dining table where tales of the day are shared or, on colder nights, in front of a roaring log fire; in the romantic privacy of a private deck or next to the pool in the midday heat. Best of all, out in the bush, on the banks of the river or high up on the cliffs in face of the evening breezes and the setting of the sun.

Wherever you are, you will be looked after by a small team of friendly staff, chosen not only for their deep sense of African hospitality but also for their intimate knowledge of the surrounding bush, its wildlife, people and ways. Activities from Loisaba Lodge include game drives, mountain bike riding, helicopter rides/helicamping, camel treks, horse back riding, river rafting and also the amazing trek with camels to spend a night under the African Skies in the newly designed Loisaba Star Beds the only ones of their kind in Kenya!

There are two sets of Star Beds, unique to Loisaba. The original set are located among a kopje of rocks in one of the eastern valleys overlooking the 'Kiboko' waterhole. The second and newer set is located about 8 kilometres further south on the banks of the Ewaso N'giro River. These are cantilevered over the flowing river below and are reached by footbridge from the opposite bank. These are named 'Koija' Star Beds and are part of an exciting new joint venture project that Loisaba has undertaken in partnership with the Laikipiak Maasai people from the Koija community. Each Star Bed is on a dramatically designed, handcrafted wooden raised platform, partially covered with a thatched roof. Homemade 'Mukokoteni' (uniquely designed bed on wheels'), can either be wheeled onto the open deck area for a night under the stars, or left under the shelter of the roof. All the beds have complete 'four-poster' insect netting. The Star Beds are normally reached by one of many options; on foot, horse, camel or vehicle. Guests are guided and hosted by a team of traditional Samburu and Laikipiak Maasai warriors. Food is prepared in traditional camp kitchen, barbeque style. Each double platform is designed for 1 or 2 people. There is also a family platform accommodating 4 people. Each platform is en-suite and has a large camp-style shower. The platforms are sited to ensure complete privacy.
