For the serious traveller, Libya is the undiscovered gold mine of North Africa. In the deserts of the south you find prehistoric rock art that has been preciously protected by the dry air of the desert. In the eastern area of Cyrenaica there are the remains of ancient cities which are more akin to Greece or Turkey than Africa, while in the west, you will have an opportunity to walk round the ruins of Leptis Magna. This, the home town of a second century Roman emperor, is one of the most beautifully preserved examples of the ancient world and one which never ceases to amaze.
Tourism is in its infancy in Libya, making it one of the last travel frontiers in the world.
