About Gina Corrigan
In 1989 Gina organised her first textile tour to South West China and, from then on, became fascinated by the textiles. She began collecting costumes and textiles from Guizhou Province because she was worried that they were going to disappear from common use. Her collection has been exhibited at three major venues in U.K: James Hockey Gallery, Farnham; The Holburne Museum, Bath; and Glasgow School of Art. In 1999, Gina's collection of over fifty costumes was acquired by the British Museum and she wrote a documentation file with each costume, which contained illustrative material from her large collection of photographs. A selection of the costumes was exhibited at the British Museum in the new B.P. gallery. The textile collection has been complemented by Gina's book, 'Miao Textiles from China' in the British Museum's Fabric Folio series. In 2005 a further text by Ruth Smith and a research team was published, analysing the stitch techniques of other Miao costumes in Gina's additional collection. A companion book in this series 'Minority Textile Techniques & Costumes from south West China' was published in August 2007.
Gina continues to study the textiles, visiting Guizhou frequently, carrying out further research and taking at least one textile tour every year. She lectures widely on Guizhou textiles and speaks regularly to Embroiderers' Guilds throughout U.K. Also, she has lectured on various subjects related to the Miao at The Hong Kong Textile Society, The Oxford Asian Textile Society, The Royal Geographic Society, The International Batik Conference in Ghent, and to the Museum der Kulturen, Basel. Her articles on the Miao have appeared in The Embroiderers' Guild Magazine, Hali Magazine and other specialist journals.
The Hampshire Museum Service exhibited a selection of Minority Costumes from South West China at their various Museums in 2006/7. This is followed by a Major Exhibition at the Knitting and Stitching Show in 2007 at London, Harrogate, Birmingham and Dublin.
She is married with a 30 year-old daughter. Gina's greatest love is photography and she gained her Fellowship of the RPS using a selection of Chinese pictures. Her photographs have been published in a wide range of books and articles. She wrote and illustrated the Odyssey Guide to Guizhou, which was first published in 1995 and a photographic book 'Images of China' published in 1997.
