Lake Nicaragua

Nicaragua - Lake NicaraguaMonastery-Granada
Referred to as 'Cocibolca' (sweet sea) by local indigenous communities, Lake Nicaragua as it is more commonly known, is one of the largest freshwater reserves in Latin America. Salt water species including sharks have been found beneath its waters.

Natural parks, volcanoes, colonial cities and artisan villages rest around the shores of Lake Nicaragua. Observe the gases exploding from Santiago crater, barter for tapestries in the artisan market of Masaya, glimpse howler monkeys in Los Guatuzos Wildlife Reserve and explore Granada, one of the oldest cities in the world. Out of the lake rises the perfect cone of Concepcion on the magical Isla de Ometepe, along with numerous other smaller islands.
