Khartoum Khartoum

Dongola frescoe, SudanDongola frescoe
Sitting at the confluence of the Blue and White Niles, Khartoum is a melting pot of the many ethnic groups that make up Sudan. Other than that there is not much to recommend, except of course for the very impressive National Museum and interesting Ethnographic Museum.

The National Museum - OK it is not the British Museum or the Cairo Museum, but it does contain many treasures and is well labelled and presented. The Kerma pottery is delicate and intricately patterned. A real surprise is the charming frescoes from Christian Nubia. Despite lasting seven hundred years, Sudan's early Christian kingdoms are little known in the outside world, which is a great shame given the beauty of some of the frescoes.

The Ethnographic Museum - an interesting and insightful look at the many ethic groups that exist in Sudan. Well worth the short visit.
