Where To Go
Although Kenya is a popular destination and its tourist industry is very developed there are still many ways of getting away from the crowds, which tend to stick to a few certain areas. To do this, we choose accommodation in a selection of farmhouses, private camps and lodges. These places are restricted to a small number of guests and safaris are often in open landrovers, on horseback or on foot safaris, or even at night for the more adventurous!
The Maasai Mara Game Reserve located in the heartland of Maasai country in South Western Kenya in the Rift Valley is widely considered to be one of Africa's greatest wildlife reserves. It comprises of 200 sq miles of open plains, woodlands and riverine forest. The vast grassland plains are scattered with herds of Zebra, Giraffe, Gazelle & Topi as well as Lion, Cheetah, Leopard, Elephant & Buffalo amongst others. Each year the Mara plays host to the world's greatest natural spectacle, the Great Wildebeest Migration from the Serengeti.
There are a number of other fantastic game reserves, parks and areas in Kenya that often get overlooked on a first visit which are dramatically stunning and game rich. In Central Kenya these include Meru National park, once home to the lioness Elsa, who achieved worldwide fame through Joy Adamson's Born Free film, which chronicled her rehabilitation back into the wilderness. Samburu National Park which is famous for it herds of Elephants. Shaba National Park and Mount Kenya are also both unique in their own right and Laikipia which hosts the largest number of endangered species in Kenya including over half of Kenya's Rhino Population. Laikipia also boasts some lovely lodges offering a wide range of activities in addition to game drives which make it exciting and unique such as horse-riding, mountain biking, fishing, quad biking..
In South and Western Kenya there is Amboseli National Park overlooking Africa's highest Mountain, Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania as well as Tsavo East and Tsavo West National Park renowned for their fantastic sunsets and dusty red game. North East of Tsavo and Amboseli lies the Chyulu Hills, another unique and relatively unknown area.
The Great Rift Valley Lakes and the Aberdare's in particular have an abundance of bird species. Kenya has over 1,200 species of birds and is a well-known paradise for birdwatchers! Lake Turkana, with its far northern end crossing into Ethiopia, is the world's largest permanent desert lake and the world's largest alkaline lake. The area is hot, dry and wild but stunningly beautiful and now a UNESCO world heritage site. Camel trekking here is a wonderful experience.
A Kenyan Safari combines well with the beach. Kenya has 536km of fabulous coastline off the warm tropical waters of the Indian Ocean. In the north there are the Islands of Lamu, Manda and Pate. South of this, is the relatively unknown area of the Tana Delta, Kiwayu and Che Chale and to the south of Mombasa there is Tiwi, Diani and Shimoni. Kenya has beautiful and remote islands for pure relaxation as well as areas full of activities including snorkelling, scuba diving, water skiing, fishing and kite surfing for the more energetic.
