Highlights of the Central Asian Silk Road
With frequent direct flights from London, new hotels and the cream of Central Asian architecture, Uzbekistan is becoming an increasingly sophisticated destination. In the north is Khiva, a once ruined desert town that has been magnificently restored through a UNESCO funded project. To it's south and across the desert, lies Bukhara with a wealth of architectural heritage dating from its days as one of the principal Silk Road cities. In the former Khanate of Samarkand the bright mosaics and domes of Registan Square, the finest Islamic ensemble in Central Asia, together with the tomb of Tamerlane, are an abrupt contrast to the more muted colours of Bukhara. In adjacent Turkmenistan, Kunya Urgench has the tallest minaret in Central Asia and the capital, Ashkabad, is well known for the quality of its carpets which are on sale at the bustling Sunday market. Across the Kara-Kum desert there is Merv, the site of several ancient cities of immense historical interest.
