Historically, Vietnam was once part of the ancient Champa Kingdom, one of the most mysterious dynasties in South East Asia, but then there is also Hue, a former Chinese Imperial city and Hoi An the beautifully preserved Chinese town. Start in the south at Ho Chi Minh (Saigon) where modern enterprise combines with old French colonial architecture before travelling south to the Mekong Delta region and spend a day travelling by boat through the markets and villages of the many rivers. At Danang there is the opportunity of five star luxury before driving over the scenic Hai Van pass to the Imperial city of Hue. Take a junk in Halong Bay where limestone pinnacles rise out of the sea and end in the elegant Northern capital of Hanoi.
