For sheer diversity, culture and access to neighbouring countries, Thailand is still a difficult destination to beat and its capital, Bangkok, has wonderful hotels, restaurants and shopping and a great atmosphere. The object should be to move out quickly and travel to the very north of Thailand, the infamous Golden Triangle, and stay at Le Meridian Baan Boran from where you can explore the nearby 14th century ruins of Chiang Saen or cross the border to Laos or Myanmar. The drive south into the hills is through rural countryside, home to some fascinating local tribes. The Four Seasons in Chiang Mai is a really beautiful hotel and an excellent base for activities in the area which range from elephant backed safaris, bamboo rafting to trekking. Pamper yourself at the end of your journey with a few nights at the lovely Baan Taling Ngam resort in Koh Samui.
