Magnificent scenery, beautiful temples and a wonderful relaxed atmosphere are a few of the treats in store for any trip around Laos. Sandwiched between China, Thailand, Vietnam, Burma and Cambodia there is a marked contrast between the different areas of this unspoilt country but an unmistakable French influence permeates through the architecture, culture and food. Laos is famous for its wonderful textiles, with each area having its own special design and superb quality. Start in Luang Prabang, the delightful, peaceful, little town situated on the Mekong River surrounded by rich forest. Based at the colonial hotel, Villa Santi, wander the streets stopping at ornate temples or sit in one of the many cafes and watch the world go by. The little town is a dream and a favourite of everyone who visits and is rightly described as the jewel in Laos' crown. From Luang Prabang fly to the capital Vientiane where the Mogul Emperor Ashoka built several temples and then take a boat down the Mekong to visit some of the Khmer temples in the southern part of the country. It is then possible to drive over the border into Thailand and fly back to Bangkok. For the more adventurous the hill tribes of northern Laos offer an exciting opportunity to travel into some rarely visited and very beautiful regions and walk through the tribal lands.
