The majority of visitors to Ethiopia visit the Historical North, and with good reason. However we recommend getting off the beaten track and combining the north with the unique cultures of the Omo valley

Ethiopia - The Island of Africa
led by Worku Sharew 9-24 October 2009
11-26 June 2010 and 8-23 October 2010Our meticulously crafted journey into Ethiopia offers insight into this remarkable part of the globe. For two weeks, we wander the road less travelled-exploring remote villages, colourful markets, and cultural treasures. In Ethiopia we discover a stirring variety of culture and landscape. Landlocked on the Horn of Africa, this is one of the oldest nations in the world and the first independent African nation. Its archaeological significance has also earned it the name "The Cradle of Mankind." We begin in the capital, Addis Ababa, which means "new flower" in Amharic. We stroll the city, visiting museums and galleries, and also make an excursion to Mount Entoto. From Addis we fly to mysterious Axum, home to some of the tallest stone obelisks in the ancient world and legendary site of the Ark of the Covenant. We continue to Lalibela with its eleven 12th-century rock-hewn churches. We'll round out our survey of northern Ethiopia in Bahir Dar and Lake Tana, Ethiopia's largest lake and source of the Blue Nile. We then fly south to Arba Minch-meaning "forty springs"-the largest town in southern Ethiopia and then drive on to the secluded towns of Turmi and Jinka, gateway into the Lower Omo Valley. Our private mobile camp allows access to remote regions. There we meet the Mursi, a distinctive and colourful group of pastoralists, most recognizable for their famous lip plates. We find the Karo people in Murelle who are celebrated for their elaborate hairstyles, each presentation laden with meaning.
